The quality of your sleep can affect every area of your life. Without a good nights sleep , your physical, mental and emotional health can suffer. Unfortunately, many Americans find that they are sleepy, irritated and depressed during the day even though they slept for a full night. If you are experiencing this, you may have sleep apnea. As part of Sleep Comfort Month in November, we want to educate our patients about what sleep apnea is and when to seek treatment.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a dangerous sleep disorder. During the night, the breathing may stop and start repeatedly. Sleep apnea is categorized in three ways:

  • Central sleep apnea – the muscles don’t receive the proper message from the brain to control breathing
  • Obstructive sleep apnea – throat muscles relax and cut off the air supply
  • Complex sleep apnea syndrome – a combination of central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea

Seeking treatment early is an important part of dealing with the condition and guaranteeing that you are getting the sleep you need to stay healthy and alert throughout the day.

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

The problem with this condition is that those who suffer from it may find that they are tired and irritable without realizing that they are waking up several times in the night. If you are concerned you have this condition, watch for the following symptoms:

  • Loud snoring
  • Choking, gasping for air or shortness of breath that wakes you from sleep
  • Regular pauses in breathing while sleeping
  • Drowsiness throughout the day which causes you to fall asleep doing basic tasks

Anytime you find that you are drowsy, chronically fatigued and irritable even when you are sleeping, seek the help of a professional. At our office, Drs. Brian Fabb & Christine Altrock are experienced in treating cases of sleep apnea.
